Make Your Photos Look Professional – Learning Digital Photography!

Article by Dan Eitreim

The key to learning digital photography is a comparatively uncomplicated one…you simply need to comprehend that it is essentially the same as film photography. As soon as you truly get that – the rest is usually a snap.

There’s only a couple of central differences between them…

First: There’s a difference in how the light is recorded. Now we make use of a digital sensor where traditionally light was recorded on film.

Second: We wind up with our images stored on a digital memory stick instead of film. So this makes it possible to see our photographs right now as opposed to waiting for the local one hour lab to process and print our photos. We only down load the pictures from the memory stick and into our computer.

The traditionalists among us think that film still makes the best photo, but with the many recent scientific improvements in digital – only a really discriminating eye can ascertain the difference. And only then if it is enlarged to a tremendous size.

So essentially, in learning digital photography we still really should try to follow the essential steps we have always taken:

Find out how the shutter speed affects our photos and when to work with a quick one or perhaps a slow one to achieve our creative goals.

Next we need to grasp the f-stop settings and the way they artistically affect our photography.

After these fundamentals are under our belts, then it is time to study light and how to control it to turn a colorless unappealing setting into one that adds the jaw dropping “wow” factor into our pictures.

Toss in some learning of and practicing the various poses and then we will have all the skills we need to shoot amazing pictures – whether film or digital.

At this point in our development, we see the biggest benefit of digital over film photography…ease in manipulation.

Retouching and photography manipulation is a vital area in the creative process and digital makes this straightforward for everybody! It was once very hard to make alterations and retouches on film but now, a few minutes in any basic photo editing program – and then we can ALL appear to be professionals.

So the secret to learning digital photography isn’t to be too concerned with the fact that it’s digital – it’s merely a storage vehicle – learn the basics of excellent photo techniques and you will do very well.
