I found the author’s main book on my camera, David Busch’s Canon EOS 7D Guide to Digital SLR Photography invaluable, and wanted the same kind of advice in a more compact size that I could put in my camera bag and use when I am out taking pictures. This was a perfect companion. It includes very complete descriptions of all the controls and buttons on the camera and how to use them, which is especially important because the 7D has some new features and capabilities that weren’t available with my previous camera, a 50D. There is also two chapters describing each of the menu entries and all of the options, so, when I am in a particular shooting situation I can look up a menu choice and read David’s recommendations about which is best for that scene. There is also a chapter that consists of tables listing his recommendations for settings for the most common shooting scenarios.

Now I use the larger book to master photography with my 7D, and this one as my field reference guide. Both are great.

Much-needed alternative, with just the facts you need, June 19, 2011

Author David Busch continues to impress with this new series of pocketable books that serve as a supplement to his comprehensive camera guides for the leading digital cameras. This one offers a companion for the popular Canon EOS 7D, in a spiral-bound form factor that is easy to slip in a camera bag and have available at all times. The 7D has some interesting features, including a radical new autofocus system and the first appearance of built-in wireless flash capabilities in a Canon D-SLR. Busch explains them all in a way that’s easy to understand. His novel approach is to condense all the essential information about each and every control on the camera into a multi-page “roadmap” that explains their functions without the need to leap around from page to page, as is the case with the Canon manual. He devotes two full chapters to outlining every menu option, and actually provides much more detail than you’ll find in most of the other “expanded” guides for the 7D.

This book is a worthy replacement for those laminated cheat sheets that fold out into six index card sized tabs with one-sentence summaries of most of the menu settings, too. As with all of the Compact Field Guides we’ve reviewed, this one offers clear, easy to understand guidance in a most convenient format. While this portable guide duplicates some of the information found in David Busch’s Canon EOS 7D Guide to Digital SLR Photography, the two make a great pair for home and field. You’ll want to buy them both to have the information you need on the go and for study at home.

I purchased both this book and the author’s full size guide. Both are excellent, with exactly the kind of information I need to use my new camera. It tells you how to set up the camera and use each control. Perfect size for carrying around in my camera bag. Highly recommended by me.
